Mission

The Church exists for mission.  Whiteabbey Presbyterian’s purpose is to love Christ and to make Him known’, to make Him known not just in our own community but to the ends of the earth.

To distinguish between our responsibilities locally and globally, two Working Groups of the Kirk Session have been set up.  The Evangelism Working Group is responsible for ‘making Christ known within our own community.  The Mission Working Group is responsible for encouraging the congregation to be concerned for and involved with Christ’s mission around the world.

As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland our first responsibility must be to the mission activities of the Church both in Ireland and Overseas.  This covers a wide variety of activities by the many Boards and agencies of the Church which are listed each year in the Points for Prayer handbook.  Prayer for the mission of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland should be a priority for every member.  Financial support is provided through the Annual United Appeal and the World Development appeal.  The latter supports the work of Christian Aid and Tearfund.

In addition to our responsibilities to the mission of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland we encourage interest in and support for mission organisations which provide special support for the Church globally.  For example – The Bible Society, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Missionary Aviation Fellowship, Far East Broadcasting Association (FEBA).

A important area of concern is the Persecuted Church around the world.  The congregation is encouraged to support the work of the Barnabas Fund in its efforts to campaign for freedom to worship and to give aid to those who are persecuted.

In 2003 The Board of Mission Overseas requested Whiteabbey to establish a partnership with Mulanje Mission of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian in Malawi in association with Dun Laoghaire congregation.

See Project Malawi: Mulanje Mission.

The congregation also seeks to support a church plant in our Presbytery called  'The Living Room'
