Sunday School is a time when the children and young people of the
church meet together with older members of the congregation who love
the Lord.
These older members, who make up the staff of the Sunday School, trust
and pray that the Holy Spirit will work through them to bring the
children into a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that
they will not just learn about Him but that they will ultimately be
able to say what the apostle Paul said in his letter to Timothy in
the Bible: that they know Him.
“I know whom I have believed and am convinced that He is
able to guard what I have entrusted to Him.”
2 Tim. 1:12
During Sunday School there are opportunities to worship God by
singing and praying together. Part of the time is spent in small
groups. Usually a passage or story from the Bible is read and studied
in a variety of ways and the Holy Spirit is given the opportunity
to apply this word from God to our hearts. This is often a learning
experience for both the staff and the pupils. They also have time
to share their experiences of what God is currently doing in their
lives and so encourage each other to follow Him more closely and
to work harder in sharing their love and knowledge of Him with other
people.
Sometimes we watch video programmes that present Bible stories
and the challenge of the gospel in very modern ways. Also drama
and other media are used to give the children as much variety as
possible and to hopefully stimulate their interest in the things
of God.
After time has been spent in learning from the Bible age-appropriate
material is used to help reinforce what they have learnt. This is
completed by the children and young people in class and then is
taken home so that parents can follow up what has been studied if
they wish to do so.
The staff in Sunday School pray that Christian parents will take
the role of leading their own children to the Lord very seriously
as we believe that there is no greater influence on the children’s
lives than that of the home in which they are raised. The time and
influence that we have in Sunday School is very limited when compared
to this. We hope to work as partners with Christian parents and
we greatly value their prayers.
At Christmas time and on Children’s Day we usually have the
opportunity to share some of the songs we have been singing, and
some of the subjects we have been considering in Sunday School,
with the rest of the church family as we take part in church services. |
