Whiteabbey Presbyterian Badminton Club

The Club has been in existence since 1959 providing recreational facilities and social contact for those interested in the sport.

Initially the membership stemmed mainly from members of the congregation and we participated in the Presbyterian League competitions for many years. Unfortunately during the past forty plus years the growth of leisure centres, golf clubs, and rugby clubs providing leisure facilities, church centred badminton has been in decline. However those devotees who enjoy the sport and the friendships cemented through the years still keep the game alive and well in Whiteabbey. Presently we have 30 members meeting on Monday nights during the season enjoying the healthy sporting activities and supporting two teams in various competitions.

Some twenty years ago we formed a "seniors" club who play on Thursday mornings, catering for those who have retired in the age group "55 plus" and are fit enough to continue with the game they have enjoyed for a "lifetime". At present we have some fifteen members, three of which still struggle down on Monday nights as well.

We have a close contact with the outreach of the Church and financially support the various fund raising efforts in support of our sister church in Malawi.

Apart from "home members" we have members from Ballysillan, Abbey, Newtownards, Carrickfergus, Belmont Presbyterians and also from Whiteabbey Methodist, Greenisland Methodist, St Patricks, Carnmoney Parish, St James RC – two BHS pupils and UU Jordanstown students.
